Freestyle & Off-Ice Class Information


FREESTYLE SESSIONS

Advanced skaters wanting to practice jumps, spins, leg lifts and any other advanced skating techniques (with or without a coach) are encouraged to attend the 50-60 weekly freestyle skating sessions that are offered to practice these maneuvers.

In addition, the Ice Den Scottsdale offers various structured on ice and off ice classes with structured curriculum to focus on specific skills and training.  Details and descriptions are listed below. 

 

NOTE: REGISTRATION CUT-OFF

Class registration will automatically close at scheduled session start time or when capacity is reached.

Skaters are not permitted to skate if skater name is not registered for session.  Skaters who intentionally skate knowing they have not registered will be subject to disciplinary action including loss of ice privileges.
NO EXCEPTIONS.

FREESTYLES ARE FIGURE SKATING ONLY SESSIONS
THIS IS NOT PUBLIC SKATE REGISTRATION.


ON-ICE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Ice Den Directors reserve the right to place skaters in appropriate levels regardless of their test record.


OPEN FREESTYLE (OPEN FS)

Open to all skaters passed Basic 6 and above. Skaters lower than Basic 6, must be accompanied by a coach for at least a portion of the freestyle session.

Private hockey lessons are permitted on open freeskate sessions. Hockey players 11 and under must be in a coached lesson for the entire time of the session.  Players over 12 that are aware of the session policies may practice on their own.

PRELIMINARY & UP FREESTYLE (PRELIMINARY & UP FS)

Skaters who have passed Preliminary Freeskate and above. Adult skaters who have passed Adult Silver Freeskate test or higher.  Dancers who have passed all the Bronze dances and above. Teams: Qualifications for freestyle sessions are based on pair or free dance level passed by at least one member of the team. Ice Den Chandler Directors reserve the right to place skaters in appropriate levels regardless of their test record.

Travel Hockey Players - must be current travel players ages 10 and up and working with a coach for the entire time. Players over 12 that are aware of the session policies may practice on their own.

JUVENILE & UP FREESTYLE (JUV & UP FS)

·A well-balanced competitor who has competed at the Juvenile level and higher. An excel competitor who has competed at the Excel Juvenile or higher.

  • Solo Dance Skaters/Dance Tests Skaters: passed all Silver dance tests.
  • Free dance Teams: must have competed Intermediate Free dance.
  • Pairs Teams: must have competed in Intermediate pairs events.
  • Adult Skaters: passed adult gold skating skills.
  • Travel Hockey Players: must be current travel players ages 10 and up. Players over 12 that are aware of the session policies may practice on their own.

If a skater does not compete in singles, dance or pairs and is working on skating skills only - skaters must have passed Silver Skating Skills.

ADULT ONLY FREESTYLES

Open to Adult Beginners or Recreational skaters as well as Adult Skaters working on Adult Singles, Free Skating, or Skating Skills Requirements for competition. Rate of speed and safety for all skaters on the session must be respected. This session is not for skaters who are currently competing in Excel, Well balanced tracks, or retired skaters with Juvenile FS tests or higher. 

Skaters must have their own skates to participate on these sessions. Figure and hockey skaters (no sticks) are welcome!

SPECIALTY (Power & Edge Class) 

Friday = 3:45 PM-4:15 PM

For skaters passed Preliminary Skating Skills and Up. In this class we will utilize drills & technical exercises to improve power & speed.  These drills will help skaters develop knee & ankle rhythm, proper weight transfer and agility to achieve greater power on the ice.

This class will also help skaters understand the importance of controlled, sustained edges. Developing an understanding of the importance of patterns through the use of small group tracking aka birding. Embracing all the different edges, turns and steps fundamental for skating skills/transitions.

SPECIALTY (Jumps, Spins, Power & Edge Class) 

Certain Saturdays = 6:45 AM-8:00 AM 

All skaters are welcome who have passed Freeskate 4 and above. This class will be divided into all disciplines including jumps, spins, power, and edge.

Skaters not Freeskate 4 and above, may ask for permission to attend and determination will be based on the class attendance numbers and skater’s ability.

OFF-ICE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS



BALLET 1   

Saturday = 11:00-11:45 AM
Saturday classes are held in the Ballet Room

Open to all skating levels. All ages welcome. Ballet experience not necessary.

This is a beginning level ballet technique class. Ballet training at the foundational level will emphasize the understanding of correct body placement, proper use of turnout, coordination of the upper body, and use of arms. Clear explanations of exercises and theory help students use the ballet vocabulary in a simple and practical way that leads to increased technical understanding, healthy physical development, and lifelong enjoyment. Skaters who cross train with strong ballet technique, will have better form, posture, lines, musicality, fluidity, coordination, balance, positioning, grace, strength, and agility on the ice.

Skating or dance attire and ballet shoes are required. Hair must be pulled back neatly.

BALLET 2 

Saturday = 12:00 PM -1:00 PM

Saturday classes will be held in the Ballet Room

Open to all skating levels with prior ballet knowledge and experience. 

This is an intermediate level ballet technique class.  The understanding of correct body placement, proper use of turnout, coordination of the upper body, and use of arms will be further explored to develop artistic expression.  Exercises become more complex and choreographic and are explained and demonstrated to help skaters use the ballet vocabulary in a simple and practical way, leading to increased technical understanding, healthy physical development, and lifelong enjoyment.  Skaters who cross train with ballet technique will have better form, posture, lines, musicality, fluidity, coordination, balance, positioning, grace, strength, and agility on the ice. 

Skating or dance attire and ballet shoes are required.  Hair must be pulled back neatly.

Stretch & Strength

Wednesday 6:00 - 6:45 PM

Classes are held in the Ballet Room

This class is designed for all ages and levels. Flexibility and strength training is vital for all skaters. This class features a blend of core strengthening and flexibility exercises , designed specifically for skaters, and artistic athletes. The exercises target various muscle groups. The goal is to strengthen and lengthen these muscles to improve range of motion, perform higher jumps, increase extensions, and enhance elasticity without injuries. There will be a strong emphasis on strengthening the core and back muscles to enable control in body position. Emphasis is put on commonly used positions such as spirals, y-spirals, beillmanns, I-spin positions, illusions, split jumps etc.

Yoga mats are required. Stretch bands are recommended (www.superiorstretch.com)

Skating or dance attire required. Hair must be pulled back neatly.

Dryland/Conditioning & Injury Prevention 1

Thursday = 5:05-5:50 PM 

Strength and conditioning program for figure skaters. Open to all levels of skaters Ages 8 and up. Classes held at the Ice Den Scottsdale - Upstairs in the Apex Rink workout space. Skating or exercise attire only. Training shoes (sneakers, running shoes) are mandatory. Classes will focus on strength, power, cardiovascular conditioning, off-ice jumps, injury prevention, balance, and coordination for skaters. This class will be taught by Ice Den’s coaches and trainers.  

Skaters below the minimum age may ask for permission to attend and determination will be based on the class attendance numbers and skater’s maturity.


Dryland/Conditioning & Injury Prevention 2

Tuesday 4:00 - 5:00 PM

Classes held at Ice Den Performance (IDP)

Prices vary depending on frequency of classes

This is a high level, strength and conditioning class for skaters 13 years and older, or for skaters who have passed Juvenile skating skills.  This class is designed to elevate your development in all aspects of figure skating.  This class will have heavy emphasis on plyometrics, strength and conditioning, and injury prevention.

Sessions will be 60 minutes and offered twice a week at the Ice Den Performance Center.  Register for these classes at IDP.


DRYLAND/Off-Ice Jumps

Certain Saturdays = 8:15 AM-9:00AM

Strength and conditioning program for figure skaters. Open to all levels of skaters Ages 7-11 years. Classes held at the Ice Den Scottsdale - Upstairs in the Apex Rink workout space. Skating or exercise attire only. Training shoes (sneakers, running shoes) are mandatory. Classes will focus on strength, power, cardiovascular conditioning, injury prevention, balance, and coordination for skaters. Off-ice jumps will cover all single and double jumps. Classes will be taught by Ice Den certified coaches.
